Many backpacking tents also offer “hotel” style awning add ons that create a lightweight porch that you can use to create a separate from your dog.

In a hurry? Here’s our top 3 picks for the best tent for backpacking with dogs.

Nemo Aurora

Nemo Aurora

The Nemo Aurora 2-person tent is one of our favorite tents for backpacking with your dog. Despite not being the lightest to make the list, it offers some fantastic features that will make your trip more comfortable for you and your dog. In fact, Nemo are one of the only manufacturers to create tents for dog owners.

It features almost vertical walls to create a much more spacious and liveable environment. The sprawling interior means you have more room to sleep, chill out, relax and have fun with your dog after a long day of backpacking.

With two doors and two vestibules, you’ll have plenty of space to store gear and comfortably get in and out of your tent without having to climb over your dog. It also allows for you to have one entrance and exit for your dog to go outside to the toilet without him having to climb over all of your gear.

The interior also features plenty of mesh pockets for storing your essentials, allowing you to keep belongings such as your phone safe from harm and within easy reach.

The snap attachment feature ensures the Pawprint doesn’t shift around when you or your dog moves, and keeps it firmly in place, providing wall to wall protection and comfort. You can purchase the Aurora Pawprint on Amazon here.

Nemo Aurora

While the Pawprint is an optional extra, the tent does come supplied with a footprint. A rare extra with most tents. Many tent manufacturers require you to purchase the footprint separately. A nice feature from Nemo that will ensure you get the longest life out of your Aurora tent.

At 5lbs 7oz, it’s on the heavier end of the accepted backpacking weight for tents. However, this does include the footprint which most tents don’t come supplied with, so if you wanted to forego the footprint then this would reduce the weight by almost 8 oz. It packs down to a nice 23 x 7 inches, making it super easy to carry on your back without getting in the way.

The Alps Mountaineering Mystique 1.5 is a high-quality, budget backpacking tent. Made to offer more space than a 1-person tent, but without the added weight of a 2-person tent, it’s the perfect backpacking companion for you and your dog.

The size and space is ideal for 1-person and 1 or 2 small dogs. Similar to the above, there is absolutely NO reason on the planet not to purchase a footprint to go with your tent. Particularly when you’ve splashed the cash for a lightweight, backpacking tent.

The Copper Spur is definitely a tent that should be protected with a footprint. While it’s lightweight, this is because the materials used are thinner, and while they are strong, they don’t perform particularly well when something sharp presses against them.

So, protect the floor of your tent with a footprint. You’ll regret it if you don’t. Promise.
